Our Adoption Process

 

We always have a variety of birds available for fostering and adoption.  You can view our birds below.  If we do not have a particular species you are interested in adopting, you can still submit an application for "pre-approval."  This can save you some time by putting you on a waiting list.  If we know that species will be coming in, we would notify you ahead of time.

 

All of the birds have descriptions and as much background information as possible, and most have accompanying pictures.  If you are interested in a particular bird, you can fill out an Adoption Application. You can then mail it to us at the address below, or send it by e-mail.  Because not all computers will open all types of programs, we have the application in three different formats:

Microsoft Word  You should be able to open it in any Word version and fill it out on your computer. Place your cursor at the beginning of a line and start typing. Use the Tab key to go from line to line. The check boxes can be marked by clicking with your cursor. To uncheck a box, simply click it again.

PDF  This will open using the free Adobe Reader program. You can print it out and complete by hand, then mail it to us; or you scan it and e-mail it to us. 

Web Page  This will open as an online web page. You can print it out and complete by hand, then mail it to us; or you scan it and e-mail it to us.

Home visits are required prior to all bird adoptions, and we prefer local adoptions.  Keep in mind we will not ship any of our adoptable birds, and we do not adopt to breeders.  All references will be checked for all birds.  If approved, you must drive to St. Louis, MO to pick up the approved pet.  Adoption donations may be paid by cash.  We apologize that we can no longer accept personal checks.  For a range of suggested adoption donations, please see our FAQ page.

 

One important factor to take into consideration is if you smoke.  All animals are negatively affected by tobacco smoke, but birds in particular are susceptible to its effects.  In addition to breathing and overall health problems, many birds will obsessively preen in an attempt to rid themselves of the smoke, and the result can be severe feather plucking. 

 

Applications are kept on file for one year.  If you are applying again and it has been more than 12 months since the previous application, please submit a new and updated application.

 

We hope you understand the necessity of these requirements.  Our birds are truly "precious" and deserve the right home and the right family.  That means we need to be certain about the circumstances surrounding every potential adoption.
