Alex and Lexi

Species: Congo African Grey

We received a call one Friday morning from a worker at a humane society in another Missouri city.  Two African Greys had been dumped off at their site in a cardboard box.  The birds were very scared and in bad shape.  She asked if we would take them and arranged a transport.  When they arrived, they were in even worse shape than we had feared.  Lexi couldn't even perch and we had to put her on a towel on the bottom of the cage.  She was suffering the terrible effects of Vitamin D3 deficiency.

Lexi didn't make it.  She died less than a month after she arrived.  Her mate, Alex, was grieving over her body one morning.

Alex was very frightened when they first arrived.  We had to completely cover the cage for the first couple of days.  If he saw anything, he freaked out.  Gradually, we opened the cover until the cage was exposed.

Alex ultimately made it.  It was 6 months before he was stable enough to adopt.  But he is continuing to recover and doing nicely now.
